Scam Alert: Arrest & Bail Payment Fraud

People’s Bank of Seneca wants to make customers aware of a scam that has recently been reported in our area. Local law enforcement has indicated that these incidents are becoming more frequent.

In this scam, fraudsters use public arrest records to contact family members or next of kin, claiming that a loved one has been arrested and urgently needs money for bail or for a device required for release. To make the request seem legitimate, the scammer may include accurate details about the arrest and apply pressure to send money quickly through digital payment services such as Zelle or Apple Pay.

If you receive a call or message like this, pause before taking action. Do not send money right away. Take time to verify the situation by contacting your family member directly or calling local law enforcement using a trusted phone number. Requests for immediate payment through digital apps are a common warning sign.
